About the League

The Scottish Tourism Workers League provides support to workers whose livelihoods depend on tourism.

Stories

Your accounts of how tourism and employment are changing in the Highlands, and how we can face the future together.

Jonathan

“Tourism has changed a lot in the last few months. The work is different, with fewer international tourists and more visitors from the central belt. I’ve been enjoying seeing more folk from Scotland and the North of England experience the Highlands, some for the first time.”

Callum

“Our boss didn’t want to put us on furlough initially, but when it became clear that all the other hotel workers in the area were being furloughed, we challenged him on it and he caved. Last week, though, we received notice that redundancies would be made.”

Rowan

“Lots of tourism workers are precarious, and many have to stay in accommodation owned by their bosses. When that happens, you have no control over your life outside of work. I’m not sure if the economy will improve enough for me to be able to work in the tourism industry again, but then again, I’m not sure I’ll miss it.”

Support

In partnership with Better than Zero, the Scottish Tourism Workers League campaigns to give workers the tools to take control against bad bosses and negligent absentee owners.

  • Workers’ Control in Tourism
Covid-19 marks the beginning of a new era for Scotland’s tourism industry. Tourism bosses want a precarious and cheap work force at their disposal, to hire and fire at will. This can be avoided by not allowing an erosion of your conditions and health. Whatever your issue at work, we would always advise that theContinue reading “Workers’ Control in Tourism”
